Politics affects every area of our daily lives. Here's what I think about some of the issues that are important to us all.

Health

The Conservative Party is committed not just to the principles behind the NHS, but to doing all we can to improve the way it works in practice. I have been campaigning against this Labour Government's policy of closing local GP surgeries to give us larger poly-clinics.

  • I think people working on the frontline should be able to get on with the job they signed up for without getting tied up in a web of targets.
  • I think more power should be put in the hands of patients by giving them better information about the care they can expect to receive.

Education

I am proud to be a governor of Berrymede Junior School in Acton, which continues to shine and win awards, despite being located in a challenging and deprived area. The Conservative Party want to offer parents and teachers more control over schools that perform well and we plan to allow new, smaller, state-funded schools to open so there can be more choice for parents.

  • I think teachers should be able to set classes by ability allowing them to stretch the strongest while nurturing the weakest.
  • I think more discipline is needed in classrooms to prevent lessons getting disrupted and that teachers should be respected by parents and pupils alike.

Environment

Our greatest responsibility is to pass this planet in onto the next generations in the best possible condition. Locally, we need to take much greater care of our green spaces and streets. I work with a team of young Conservatives across Ealing and Acton cleaning up what we call "grotpots" (areas that could do with a little TLC), when residents contact us to ask for our help.

  • I think that good environmentalism begins at home.  The state of our neighbourhood is what makes the difference between an uplifting and a depressing experience every time we walk out of the front door.
  • I think each generation should strive to pass on this planet to the next generation in a better condition than that which they inherited.

Transport

Transport is a difficult policy area to get right. The key is to find a balance between the competing transport modes, as most of us cannot be pigeon-holed as solely a motorist, a bus-user, a train-user, a pedestrian or a cyclist. I do think that more needs to be done however to make cycling a safer, more enjoyable mode of transport across London.

  • I think good traffic management should be about getting the cars and other vehicles to flow through town as smoothly as possible.
  • I think that people should not be punished for driving their car, as it's sometimes essential. Instead we need to focus on improving alternative methods of transport, which would encourage people to leave their cars at home.

Crossrail

The most important transport project for London in a generation, Crossrail will make a huge difference to Ealing and Acton. Work is due to start at Ealing Broadway station early in 2013 and I will not rest until it does!

Ealing Broadway Station

It is quite clear that we are not going to get any real improvements at Ealing Broadway station until we get the Crossrail upgrade, though I think the lack of facilities there, such as lifts and ramps, are a scandal. If we must now wait for Crossrail it is imperative that the work starts on time.

  • I think passengers, who are already paying high enough train fares, are entitled to expect safe and easy access to platforms. The current situation, in which they are herded down steep steps into a crowded ticket hall and then down further steps to reach the trains, is completely unacceptable. Disabled travellers can't use the station at all without assistance.
  • I think it is essential that Ealing Broadway station receives the earliest attention of the Crossrail team as part of their station upgrade programme in order to give all of us the station we need and have waited for for far too long.

Heathrow

I have been a staunch opponent of further expansion of Heathrow for many years and I am delighted that David Cameron has pledged that the Conservative Party will put a stop to the third runway and sixth terminal if we are elected to govern in 2010.

  • I think making Heathrow any larger will pose serious health risks not to mention unacceptable noise pollution and congestion for Ealing and Acton residents.
  • I think the solution is not in expanding Heathrow but in alternative options such as high-speed train links between London and other major cities around UK.

Crime

The police do a terrific job in what is quite a challenging area and the additional PCSOs funded by our Conservative Council are obviously a real bonus, but more real police officers on our streets are what we all want to see. A Conservative Government will also find a way of cutting back paperwork for police officers.

  • I think that policemen should be seen on the streets, not sitting behind a desk.
  • I think we need more fully trained police officers with powers to arrest as well as PCSOs who are out on the beat 24/7.

Economy

Gordon Brown and the Labour Party have saddled this country with a staggering level of debt. A Conservative Government will do everything it can to avoid raising more taxes - especially the rise in National Insurance contributions as planned by Labour - but we will certainly have to consider ways of cutting back on public spending. We can and will get back to a healthy economy.

  • I think that a healthy economy is one that saves for a rainy day.
  • I think a healthy economy is one when the private sector is not overwhelmed by the burden of an oversized public sector.

Regenerating Ealing and Acton

Central Ealing and Acton Town Centre are both badly in need of major regeneration, but my concern is whether local services, such as GP's and schools will be able to cope with the extra demand from new residents. A thought: although this is not yet a Conservative policy, I believe the best way to help local Councils like Ealing to boost local shops and businesses would be to hand back to local government the control of business rates from Central Government.

  • I think that whilst the regeneration is a must when it comes to Ealing Centre and Acton Town Centre, a careful consideration must be taken to ensure that local services can cope with an increased demand.
  • I think that residents' views must be listened to when implementing such significant changes to our neighbourhood.
