Politics affects every area of our daily lives. Here's what I think about some of the issues that are important to us all.
Politics affects every area of our daily lives. Here's what I think about some of the issues that are important to us all.
The Conservative Party is committed not just to the principles behind the NHS, but to doing all we can to improve the way it works in practice. I have been campaigning against this Labour Government's policy of closing local GP surgeries to give us larger poly-clinics.
I am proud to be a governor of Berrymede Junior School in Acton, which continues to shine and win awards, despite being located in a challenging and deprived area. The Conservative Party want to offer parents and teachers more control over schools that perform well and we plan to allow new, smaller, state-funded schools to open so there can be more choice for parents.
Our greatest responsibility is to pass this planet in onto the next generations in the best possible condition. Locally, we need to take much greater care of our green spaces and streets. I work with a team of young Conservatives across Ealing and Acton cleaning up what we call "grotpots" (areas that could do with a little TLC), when residents contact us to ask for our help.
Transport is a difficult policy area to get right. The key is to find a balance between the competing transport modes, as most of us cannot be pigeon-holed as solely a motorist, a bus-user, a train-user, a pedestrian or a cyclist. I do think that more needs to be done however to make cycling a safer, more enjoyable mode of transport across London.
The most important transport project for London in a generation, Crossrail will make a huge difference to Ealing and Acton. Work is due to start at Ealing Broadway station early in 2013 and I will not rest until it does!
It is quite clear that we are not going to get any real improvements at Ealing Broadway station until we get the Crossrail upgrade, though I think the lack of facilities there, such as lifts and ramps, are a scandal. If we must now wait for Crossrail it is imperative that the work starts on time.
I have been a staunch opponent of further expansion of Heathrow for many years and I am delighted that David Cameron has pledged that the Conservative Party will put a stop to the third runway and sixth terminal if we are elected to govern in 2010.
The police do a terrific job in what is quite a challenging area and the additional PCSOs funded by our Conservative Council are obviously a real bonus, but more real police officers on our streets are what we all want to see. A Conservative Government will also find a way of cutting back paperwork for police officers.
Gordon Brown and the Labour Party have saddled this country with a staggering level of debt. A Conservative Government will do everything it can to avoid raising more taxes - especially the rise in National Insurance contributions as planned by Labour - but we will certainly have to consider ways of cutting back on public spending. We can and will get back to a healthy economy.
Central Ealing and Acton Town Centre are both badly in need of major regeneration, but my concern is whether local services, such as GP's and schools will be able to cope with the extra demand from new residents. A thought: although this is not yet a Conservative policy, I believe the best way to help local Councils like Ealing to boost local shops and businesses would be to hand back to local government the control of business rates from Central Government.
Voters in this neighbourhood will determine who forms the next Government. This area is now a key marginal seat that the Conservatives must win to form a Government. Your vote will directly decide if Gordon Brown or David Cameron is the next PM.
